The Tomb of Tutankhamun
Howard Carter
The Folio Society, £75
‘Wonderful things’ is what Howard Carter described seeing when he peered into the tomb of Tutankhamun for the first time. After years of trials and tribulations, and in the last season of excavation before the budget would have been cut, his team unearthed the most intact burial of the Valley of the Kings – a burial that is now famous throughout the world. Carter’s notes on the excavations are a journey through the highs and lows of this discovery, and the new Folio Society edition of his original texts definitely do justice to the celebrated exploration. Comprising of two volumes, the first contains Carter’s notes, a foreword by noted curator and Egyptologist, David P Silverman, as well as fantastic reproductions of Harry Burton’s original black-and-white photographs from the excavations. The second accompanying volume is filled with full-page, high-resolution colour photographs of the artefacts found inside the tomb, making this edition itself a beautiful treasure.
